Explanation with the 2010 update. The current list is scores only. Translation of tasting notes is being progressed with low prority as this English part of our website seems not to be visited frequently. Please send me an e-mail if you would like to see the English tasting notes as well.
At this point there is unfortunately no longer a single whisky priced below 80 euro in my personal top 100. So obviously there is a relation between price and quality, but that does not mean that an expensive whisky is always better. You will find many relatively low scoring and very expensive whiskies in my list with tasting notes. This page lists whiskies with the best price-quality performance based on my own scores. The selection criteria are quite strict: readily available distillery owners botteling priced below 80 euro. Please note that ALL independent bottlings (e.g. Signatory, Gordon & MacPhail, etc) and rare limited editions (e.g. Talisker 12Y, Ardbeg Airigh nam beist) have been deleted from the selection. Price indications have been obtained from the Dutch website of Ton Overmars (http://www.tonovermars.nl/assortiment.html) and the German Whiskystore of Theresia Luening (http://www.thewhiskystore.com/). Locally higher or lower shop prices are of course possible, which could cause the whisky ending up in a different pricing range and a maybe a more or less favourable position in that range. Occasionally for example the Johnny Walker Green Label and Talisker 10Y can be found below 30 euro and Glenkinchie 12Y sometimes above 30 euro. Tough, but that is the consequence of an arbitrary price limit.
Warning: brands like Lagavulin, Laphroaig, Ardbeg, Talisker are very peaty and not the best choice for starters or the fainthearted!
